The European Commission is looking into the proposed $1.7bn acquisition of South Korean shipyard DSME by compatriot Hyundai Heavy Industries.

Following HHI's application for approval by the European Union executive body last month, the EC said on Tuesday it was concerned the deal would reduce competition, raise prices and stifle innovation in the sector.

"Maritime transport represents a substantial portion of the EU's internal and external freight trade, with European shipping companies regularly purchasing vessels from [Daewoo and Hyundai]," commission executive vice president Margrethe Vestager said.
