Owners have splashed out close to $75bn on new vessels so far this year, which is little change from 2021, but the number of ships contracted is easing.

Data from Clarksons Research shows 899 ships of 54.2m dwt were ordered at shipyards between January and August.

This represents a decline of 39% compared with a strong year for new deals in 2021.
