Almost all shipbreaking activity at India's Alang breaking beaches has stopped as oxygen is directed instead towards efforts to fight a new wave of Covid-19.

Alang ship recyclers consume up to 100 tonnes of oxygen per day for use in torches.

Most of it is sourced from Shree Ram Group in Bhavnagar, Reliance Industries in Jamnagar and Inox in Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

Only a handful of plots with oxygen reserves have continued to operate, but these will run out in a couple of days.
