Tsuneishi Shipbuilding unveiled plans to move bulker production out of Japan to its facilities in China and the Philippines.
The company wants to focus on more specialised ship types at its domestic yard while leaving bulker construction to its more cost-competitive sites abroad.
Japan's shipbuilders have found it difficult to compete with their main rivals in China in building bulkers in recent years.
