Twenty-four US shipyards will split $19.6m in US government grants.

The Maritime Administration announced Monday that the funds, from the Small Shipyard Grant Program, would "help modernise" the country's yards "making them more efficient in constructing commercial vessels", paying for up to 75% of a project's cost.

"Small shipyard grants play a significant role in supporting local communities by creating jobs for working families," Maritime Administrator Mark Buzby said in a statement.
