A South Korean energy-solutions company is making its shipowning debut — ploughing $270m into VLCC newbuildings at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries.

Seoul-based GS Energy has signed its groundbreaking deal for up to three 300,000-dwt conventionally fuelled, scrubber-fitted crude carriers for delivery in late 2022, according to industry sources.

It is said to be paying about $90m each for the vessels after starting newbuilding talks with the yard last year.
