Shipowners could be about to face a big delay headache at the Panama Canal due to maintenance work starting at the end of August, but the congestion could boost rates.

Engineers will be carrying out scheduled work at the Miraflores Locks starting on Sunday and lasting to 10 September.

This could severely impact canal capacity and increase delays from days to weeks, according to shipping players quoted by S&P Global Platts.
