US class society ABS has clinched US government cash to push forward nuclear power solutions for commercial shipping.

The company said the US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded a contract to research the barriers that could prevent adoption of the zero-carbon alternative.

The deal is part of an $800,000 project looking at new reactor technology.

ABS will develop models of different advanced reactor technologies for maritime applications, as well as industry advisory on the commercial use of modern nuclear power, the company said.
