A new form of nuclear power for shipping has moved a step closer as a US-led consortium secured state funding for a molten salt reactor (MSR).

The group includes UK-based start-up Core Power, which is aiming to use the technology in ships by the end of the decade.

US energy provider Southern Company and the US Department of Energy have established a cooperative agreement to design, construct and operate the world's first critical fast-spectrum MSR.
