K Line has team-up with compatriots Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and ClassNK to test what it claims will be the world’s first marine-based CO2 capture system.

The project will not only verify the efficacy of capturing and storing CO2 from a vessel’s gas emissions, but also the operability and safety of such activities at sea, the Japanese shipowner said.

K Line said the trial plant will be based on an existing CO2 capture system used for onshore power plants but converted for a marine environment.
