Maersk Tankers has said it will keep the rotor sails fitted onboard one of its LR2s after trials showed the devices created an 8.2% fuel saving.

The rotor sails were installed on the 110,000-dwt Maersk Pelican (built 2008) in August 2018 and during the year-long trial are said to have also saved the equivalent of 1,400 tonnes of CO2.

The sails are large, mechanical cylinders that spin to create a pressure differential, the Magnus Effect, that propels a vessel forward.
