Vale is to install one of Brazil’s largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) at an ore terminal near Rio de Janeiro as part of its decarbonisation strategy.

The system, which is being developed in partnership with Siemens and MicroPower Comerc, will reduce the electric energy cost at its Ilha Guaiba iron ore terminal in Mangaratiba by almost 20%.

The equipment is said to have a storage capacity of 10 megawatt-hours, which is enough energy to power 45,000 homes for one hour, Vale said.
