Tied up at a commercial pier in Philadelphia, the SS United States is a ghostly apparition of a bygone era.

The giant passenger liner shows the scars from four decades of neglect. Its luxurious features are long gone. The funnels, once bright red, white and blue, are now a faded pink, while paint flakes off the hull like scabs off a sore. It is a far cry from the days when the vessel was hailed as America’s flagship.
