There have been many rhetorical attempts of late to link the misperceived costs associated with American Jones Act shipping with the $80bn debt crisis facing the Puerto Rican government.

The situation in the Commonwealth is very serious, and deserves and requires an intellectually honest discussion about its true derivation. It is simply irresponsible to misplace blame on an industry that not only reliably delivers essential goods to Puerto Ricans and their families but one that is also investing heavily in Puerto Rico and its people when other industries are departing.
