Increasing demand from tourists wanting to explore the Polar regions is promoting the design and construction of specialist vessels that can best serve these regions.

This month, Norwegian shipbuilder Ulstein Verft announced it had signed a letter of intent (LOI) to build up to two small expedition cruiseships for an as-yet-unnamed owner.

The yard said the vessels would become the most unique expedition units in the market, with polar capability "beyond anything we have seen before", while minimising environmental impact and optimising operational cost.
