Stamatis Restis, founder of Enterprises Shipping and Trading, died suddenlylast weekend in Athens. He carried all the hallmarks of the empire-builders who have passed through the annals of Greek shipping.

Born in Athens in 1940, he went to Africa before he was 20, establishing himself in Zaire. By the age of 27 he was said to have made his first million, dealing mainly in fruit and foodstuffs. But under the Mobutu regime his business was nationalised and Stamatis Restis returned to Greece to start over, setting up reefer operator Enterprises in May 1974.
