Miami-based SunStone Ships has capped the number of next-generation expedition cruiseships being built under its Project Infinity programme at seven ships, for now at least.

Chairman and chief executive Niels-Erik Lund revealed to TradeWinds that the company did not take up the options for the three remaining ships at China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI), and these have now expired.

Project Infinity was launched in March 2017, when SunStone signed a framework agreement with CMHI to build up to 10 ice-class 1A expedition cruiseships to fill what the company said at the time was a need to provide replacement tonnage for the increasingly aged expedition cruiseship fleet.
