SMM gears up for opening

A mobile crane has lifted a huge propeller into place at Hamburg’s exhibition centre in readiness for the opening of SMM next week.

The five-bladed 80-tonne giant was winched above the main entrance at Hamburg Messe on Thursday morning, next to the city’s television tower.

The propeller has a diameter of more than nine metres and was made by Mecklenburger Metallguss (MMG).

It was built for German owner ER Schiffahrt, which is installing the design on 13 new boxships.

"We are determined to cut the fuel consumption and emissions of our ships. To achieve this we are currently retrofitting our fleet, investing roughly $30m in new bulbous bows and propellers this year alone,“ said ER CEO Hermann Klein.

The shipping trade fair begins officially on Tuesday, following a finance conference on Monday.
