German politicians have expressed worry over the impact of the Rickmers insolvency.

Norbert Hackbusch of the left-wing party Die Linke has voiced fears that it might cost the taxpayer “hundreds of millions of euros”.

His comments came with memories still fresh of HSH Nordbank’s decision last year to write off €550m ($620m) of Norddeutsche Reederei H Schuldt debt. That caused an outcry in Hamburg and opened up HSH Nordbank to charges of double standards in its dealings with local shipowners.
