Autonomous containerships of 50,000 teu could be plying the seas within 50 years — perhaps alongside modular, drone-like floating containers — and the volume of container trade will be two to five times what it is today.
That is the vision painted by McKinsey & Co in its report “Container Shipping: The next 50 years”, which argues that the search for scale in container shipping is far from over.
