New Zealand shipowners say they are being disadvantaged by an emissions 'tax' compared to rivals.

The New Zealand Shipping Federation told Radio NZ that it estimates the cost of an emissions trading scheme at NZD 250,000 ($179,000) per vessel per year.

The scheme means credits bought by fuel companies are passed on to customers, such as shipping operators.

Domestic companies have to compete against big overseas vessels that do not pay the charge.
