A chemical tanker captain has been given a suspended jail sentence of eight months after a 2014 collision with a fishing boat off France.

French prosecutor Nathalie Mathieu had asked for 10 months for the master of the 36,000-dwt Peterpaul (built 1998) after the incident involving the Rupella fishing vessel off Saint-Pierre-d'Oleron.

He was convicted of a breach of collision regulations.

Mathieu said the master had seen several trawlers in the area and should have been more attentive, the Sud Ouest daily said.

The
