The Stellar Unicorn — a similar VLOC conversion to the Stellar Daisy, which broke up and sank this month with the loss of 22 lives — sailed across the South Atlantic with a crack in the hull for nearly a month, it has emerged.

A spokesperson for the owner, Seoul-based Polaris Shipping, says the 20-centimetre crack in the 280,000-dwt Stellar Unicorn (built 1993), which led to the ship anchoring for repairs in South Africa last week, was spotted by crew on 9 March.
