UK-based officer’s union Nautilus International is warning that the industry needs to change its attitude to life-saving equipment after “decades” of neglect.
In a recent safety talk, national secretary Allan Graveson said that shipping has come to view firefighting equipment (FFE) and life-saving appliances (LSAs) more as a cost rather than a life-saving measure.
Innovation, he claims, has been focused on cost reduction rather that improving safety.
