The 39,000-dwt Maersk Kiera (built 2011) was caught trailing a slick by a satellite operated by European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA).
The shipowner pleaded guilty to a breach of UK maritime pollution legislation at Truro Magistrates Court on Friday.
In addition to the fine the company also has to pay a £120 victim surcharge and cover the prosecution’s costs of £7404.88.
The incident took place on 25 February 2012 while the ship sailed in the waters between Lands End and the Scilly Isles.
