Another man was injured as the blast hit vessel, named as Xu Yang 11, which then caught fire on Saturday at Zhangjianqi shipyard in Ningbo, the Xinhua news agency reported.
The blaze took two and a half hours to extinguish.
An unknown amount of oil leaked into the Yongjiang River.
The 300-gt vessel was under repair at the time.
