A Newcastle court today ordered the German firm to pay £73,000($121,300) including costs after the crew of the 1,800-dwt Danio (built 2001) failedto keep a proper lookout.

The vessel was sailing from Scotland to Belgium with a cargoof timber when it ran aground on the Farne Islands off the Northumberland coaston 16 March.

"It is clear to me the shocking failure to comply withregulations led the vessel to sail on automatically,” Judge Brian Forster saidat the crown court hearing today

"The potential for disaster was obvious, as it sailedon silently at night, with no lookout, with the threat to other vessels atsea."
