The 4,500-dwt Wilson Fedje (built 2012) needed an 18-hour tow to reach Kirkwall in the Orkney islands, the Orcadian newspaper reported.
The vessel experienced problems on Saturday 18 miles off Cape Wrath.
A sistership stood by by while the rescue operation took place.
The vessel could not be repaired at sea.
