Tanker blaze kills one

One crew member has now been confirmed dead as a result of the engine room fire on board Tokyo Marine Asia’s 20,000-dwt chemical tanker Pine Galaxy (built 2004).

The blaze broke out in the engine room of the tanker late last week and disabled main switchboard, the main engine and propulsion system. It was subsequently extinguished. There is reportedly no damage to the ship’s cargo compartments.

The ship was 700 nautical miles off the US West Coast whilst en route from Los Angeles to Yeosu in South Korea when the fire broke out.

The US Coasts Guard has been standing by the ship and its 22 crew members. Over the weekend the Coast Guard confirmed that one crew member had died as a result of the fire.

The Pine Galaxy’s owners have contracted with US tug boat operator Harley Marine Services to rescue their ship. The salvage tug Millennium Falcon has been dispatched to the scene.
