Pictures showed black smoke billowing from the 30,600–gt Pride of Canterbury (built 1991).
Police and firefighters headed to the scene while crew donned breathing apparatus to tackle the flames, the Dover Express reported.
P&O said the vessel had a fire in its engine room as it arrived at Calais. No injuries were reported and the blaze was extinguished by the vessel’s fire protection system.
