The 5,850-dwt ro-ro Parida (built 1999), which has a quantity of radioactive concrete in board, is now anchored near Inverness.
The fire broke out in one of the ship’s funnels on Tuesday, forcing the crew to shut down the main engine and let the ship drift.
The Parida was transporting cement waste back to Belgium after collecting it from Dounreay nuclear plant in Caithness where it had been reprocessed.
