The 23,100-gt Pacific (built 1971) was heading to India when it ran low on bunker fuel.
It was heading to the city of General Santos to load fuel but it was left adrift and soon ran aground 150 metres off the shoreline.
The possibility of oil spill is small however, as the vessel has no more fuel left in its tanks and it only has 12,000 litres of diesel on board, the coast guard said.
