The Dutch lifeboat service KRNM said the 3,600–teu Chopin (built 2012) had just taken a pilot on board off the coast of Westkapelle on 10 January.
The crewman was hit by a large wave while working on the gangway.
He fell 10 metres and was held at the waterline by his lifeline.
He was hoisted back on board and received medical attention, but was pronounced dead at the scene.
