Domestic media said the leak occurred in the engine room of the 1,220-cbm Yara Gas III (built 1975) 50 miles east of Ekofisk on Thursday morning.
Five pumps were taken aboard by two helicopters and the situation was brought under control by late afternoon.
A tug was heading to the scene to bring the vessel into port.
The crew of nine was unharmed.
