The 21,300-dwt self-unloading bulk carrier Arthur M Anderson (built 1952) became beset by ice near Conneaut Harbor in Lake Erie as it headed to Wisconsin for its winter layup, according to the US Coast Guard.
The vessel encountered problems as the Great Lakes region suffered a bitter cold spell. Ice thickness has reached 2.4 to 3 metres in some areas, authorities said.
