Second death in tragic casualty response

Pilot of helicopter responding to grounded TS Lines ship now reported as a fatality.

A second responder has reportedly died in the helicopter crash during the response to the grounding of a TS Lines containership off Taiwan.

The Taipei Times now reports that National Airborne Service pilot Lin Chen-hsin, 47, is dead, adding to the death of 34-year-old rescue team member Tsai Tsung-ta.

Dramatic video captured the moment the helicopter spun out of control and crashed while it was responding to a casualty involving the 1,578-teu TS Taipei (built 2006), which ran aground Thursday near Taipei.

The helicopter’s copilot is reported to be hospitalised after the crash.

The TS Taipei’s 21 crew members had already been been airlifted to safety.

One of two owned ships in the owned fleet of Taiwan’s TS Lines, the ship flies the Taiwan flag and is classed by Japan’s ClassNK.

Vessel tracking data show that the ship remains aground.
