Salvors have removed over half the bunker fuel from a bulker that ran aground off the island of Mauritius earlier this month.
Five Oceans Salvage says the operation to remove the remaining fuel oil from the fuel tanks of the 44,000-dwt Benita (built 1998) has made considerable progress.
“Of the 145t on board, 80t have now been pumped into specialised one tonne containers and 53 of these have been transported to a secure location on shore via helicopter,” a statement said.
