US-listed Top Tankers made a surprise move into the dry cargo segment today with the purchase of three new vessels at a total cost of $149m.

Top is buying two handymaxes and one panamax bulkers, each with charters attached, in a series of deals intended to reduce the company’s reliance on the tanker market.

The vessels, which will be delivered to the company between September 2007 and January 2008, include a 51,200-dwt supramax built in China in 2002, which will be bareboat chartered back to its sellers.
