The department of labour said it asked New York-based salvor Bennington Group to hire an independent engineer to complete an assessment on the structural integrity of the 28,000-dwt ship (built 1966), which went aground off Cape Breton more than a year ago.
Pat Murphy, of the department’s occupational health and safety division, said the engineer will assess the hull and determine whether it is safe for workers.
