The 28,800-dwt Ariadne (built 1984) was stuck at kilometre 290 of the river, a key waterway for northern Argentina grain export ports and barge traffic from Paraguay.

The vessel, which is controlled by Greece’s G Bulk, was blocking traffic in both directions, according to Argentina’s NABSA shipping agency.

The vessel was to be re-floated under its own power.

The Ariadne is classed by Det Norske Veritas and has protection-and-indemnity cover from Norway’s Gard.
