Rand Logistics reported a surprise quarterly loss that it blamed on the bankruptcy of a key customer.

The New York-based owner of Great Lakes bulk carriers reported a net loss of $4.2m for the fiscal third quarter, reversing a $4m profit reported this time last year.

The $0.23 loss per share was well below analyst expectations calling for $0.15 in earnings per share (EPS), though it was not immediately clear if analysts estimates excluded some portion of the bottom-line loss.
