Nordea Bank has taken a major step into the new world of "open banking" by granting online firms such as PayPal and Klarna access to patron's account information.

"This makes Nordea the first bank to offer its pilots access to real customer data," said the firm, which provides financial services to shipping, offshore and many other industries.

The demand for this technology came from regulators and third-party service providers, which also include enterprise resource planning software such as SAP and personal management providers like Tink, said Gunnar Berger, Nordea's head of open banking.
