India's coastal cash

India’s shipping ministry is trying to win cash from the World Bank to promote coastal operations.

It is targeting funding from the Global Environment Fund (GEF) to encourage cargo owners to move goods by sea not road, local media said.

The ministry believes cash is available because shipping is considered the most eco-friendly and fuel-efficient mode of transport. It is also cheaper.

It could seal a deal before the new government takes office in Delhi.

Plans include priority berthing facilities for coastal ships at government-owned ports, at the expense of internationally trading vessels.
