The investment is in addition to around JPY 15bn already earmarked over three years for yard improvements at its facilities in Chiba, Oita and Okayama in its 2014 to 2016 mid-term business plan.
The main part of the money will be invested in a new laser welding facility at its main shipyard in Chiba, which it hopes will help reduce manning by up to 80%.
