A number of emergency LNG ship-to-ship (STS) transfers have been carried out over the past few years as a result of incidents involving LNG carriers.

To date, big liquefaction projects like those in Qatar using large LNG fleets have opted to park the necessary equipment at key locations worldwide so it can be accessed quickly if needed. But with a full set of equipment worth more than $1m and additional costs for storage and maintenance, this cover can be prohibitively expensive for other operators.
