Fitting exhaust-gas scrubbers is one of the three main options — the others being a switch to low-sulphur fuels or LNG — open to vessel owners seeking to make their ships compliant with the rules on emissions from 2020.
The latest figures by classification society DNV GL show that at the beginning of 2018 there were 377 vessels in service that have been fitted with scrubbers.
