Christen Sveaas' Kistefos is injecting equity into a new company, dubbed Norgas Carriers, that is to take over the activities of the financially troubled IM Skaugen.
The move by the Norwegian investor will mean a long-sought after restructuring for the Oslo-listed owner.
IM Skaugen's creditors are also taking part ownership of Norgas Carriers, which will be a holding company in a refinanced group.
