Shipyards are preparing to quote on the work needed to convert the LNG carrier Excel (built 2003) into a floating storage unit (FSU) for the mid-scale Portovaya LNG export project on Russia’s Baltic Sea coast.

At least two Singapore-based yards and one Middle East facility are understood to be poring over the outline specifications for the 138,107-cbm vessel.

Industry sources say one of the key jobs will be to strengthen the ship’s hull so it can work in ice conditions.
