Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT) quizzed all 13 International Group clubs about several controversial issues as it prepared its annual review.

Clubs were asked how they could justify charging release calls at a time of record capitalisation.

And JLT asked whether the large reserves meant shipowners had in effect pre-paid any outstanding liabilities; whether a root-and-branch review of how the International Group buys reinsurance is called for; and even whether it is time to axe the agreement that restricts price competition at the annual renewal of protection-and-indemnity (P&I) cover.
