A Dutch charity that operates a migrant rescue ship wants a new code of conduct for operations after Italy claimed its volunteers had contact with people smugglers.

Jugend Rettet, which owns the 184-gt standby vessel Iuventa (built 1962), wants the IMO involved in negotiations with Italian authorities.

Prosecutors in Trapani said an investigation had found evidence suggesting Iuventa was used “to aid and abet illegal immigration”, the Independent reported.

It was held on the island of Lampedusa on Wednesday, where the crew was questioned by police.
